You can also use a scanner if you have one.īecause the pencil sketch isn’t a solid tone, we need to make it more defined. I got it into Photoshop by snapping a picture on my phone. Obviously using a marker on smooth paper will make this easier, but I want this tutorial to be useful for any image and be limited to “perfect” images. Here is an icon I quickly sketched with a pencil on a piece of bristol paper. You can skip to step 9 if you aren’t making another shape. Now we will look at making an icon from a sketch. Ill show you how to use the shape in the following steps and some great tips on using Libraries in Step 9. This makes it easy to use in the future.Ĭlick ok and the new thumbsup icon will be added to your shape library They are solution independent, unlike pixels. This means that you can make them as large or as small as you like and they will always have sharp edges. We are making paths because they are Vectors. You can use the pen tool to clean up the path if needed. Its called the work path in the path panel. You will now see a path created around the shape. Lower number = more complex path, higher number, simpler path. (you don’t have to use the pen tool because PS will do it for you.)īy default, tolerance is set to 2.0, this will work. This is where Photoshop will turn the selection into a vector path. Open the Paths Panel in Photoshop (Window>Path)Ĭhoose Make work path, if its grayed out, make sure your selection is active Press Ctrl/Cmd+Shift+I to inverse the selection. Use the Magic want and select the white around the shape. Set the width to 1000 pixels, this will be big enough to trace. Then go to Photoshop create a new document and Ctrl+V to paste the screen shotĬhoose Image>Image size (see how small it currently is in the bottom right corner)Ĭhoose Preserve details 2.0 for resample method. On Mac its Cmd+Shift+4 and drag the region to capture.Step 1. Make a screen capture of the icon. In this case we will go to youtube and snag the like icon, the thumbs up. We will need a like, comment and a subscribe badge. These steps can actually be used for anything, but for the example, we will make a set of icons to be used on youtube videos.
